WATER TURKEY CATFISHING - NORTH TEXAS CATFISH GUIDE

Photos and Information from Bass Pro Shops Texas Catfishing Seminar

Saturday October 2nd 2004

On Saturday October 2nd 2004 Chad Ferguson of North Texas Catfish Guide Service, The Texas Catfishing Resource, Redneck's Catfish Bait Soap and Redneck's Juglines conducted a free seminar on Texas Catfishing at Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World in Grapevine Texas.

The Texas Catfishing Seminar was a huge success and their was a great turnout at the event.

During the seminar, Chad discussed the Fall and Winter Texas Catfishing Patterns and how to catch channel catfish and how to catch blue catfish in Texas in the fall and winter and also equipment to use for catfishing with these patterns and techniques.

Chad has gotten a lot of phone calls and emails from people who attended the Texas Catfishing Seminar wanting to know about the equipment that was used and discussed during the Texas Catfishing Seminar.

Here is a break down of the equipment.

Catfish Fishing Rod for Cormorant Catfishing : Shakespeare Ugly Stik CAL1100 7'6" ML ACTION great fishing rod for Catfish fishing with punch bait. These are all around good catfishing rods for detecting a light bite.

Rod Product: Chad explained that he wraps his fishing rods in Rod Wrap to protect the handles and clean them off when punch bait gets caked on them. This keeps the rod handles clean.

Fishing Reel for Catfishing: Abu Garcia 6500C3 or Abu Garcia 6000 Fishing Reels are what Chad uses for his catfishing. These are good all around reels for fishing for catfish.

Fishing Line for Catfishing the Cormorants: Power Pro 50 Lb test superline fishing line is a great line for catfishing the cormorants. Chad explained that he uses "super lines" for cormorant catfishing because they are much more durable and easier to break free from snags.

Catfishing Tackle: Large Round weighted cork, with an Eagle Claw 2x Size 6 Treble Hook 18-24" below the cork and a split shot sinker 5" above the hook. The sinker discussed for the slip sinker rig was a 1oz no roll sinker and the leader material was Mason Big Cat Dacron Line in 45 Lb Test

**Specific Baits were not mentioned during the seminar but Chad did explain that he uses Punch Baits for fishing the cormorants. Some of the other baits mentioned were white spinnerbait skirts, soap bait or hooks tipped with shad. The most important part of fishing this pattern with a cork under the cormorants is the presentation.

Catfish Bait for Cormorant Catfishing: For cormorant catfishing Chad uses Sure Shot Catfish Punch Bait. Sure Shot Catfish Punch Bait has the correct texture, color and scent for cormorant catfishing or "fishing the water turkeys". Chad wholeheartedly believes that there is no better bait for cormorant catfishing than Sure Shot Catfish Punch Bait.
